    After Britain took control of Palestine in 1920, the Jewish population grew significantly through 1947 due to immigration. A 1947 UN plan proposed dividing the territory into Jewish and Arab states, but this was rejected by Arab leaders. During the 1948 war that followed, many Arab towns were depopulated and Israel gained control of most of the land, leaving scattered Arab populations.
