You have been hired as a consultant by a Swedish company whose main product is
modern furniture to do a study on the possibility of putting up a manufacturing
facility in either Cavite or Laguna. The objective of this facility is to manufacture
various models of the company’s furniture for re-export to various ASEAN countries,
as well as Hong Kong. They are also looking at the possibility of developing a
market in the Philippines.

The furniture is of modern design, high quality and easily dismantled for easy moving
and/or storage. Being moderately priced, it has become very popular in Singapore
and Hong Kong. Some distributors in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Jakarta,
Indonesia had been making serious inquiries about increasing importation into their
countries due to growing market potential there. In case the putting up of a facility in
the PH would prove to be viable, this facility would be responsible for the ASEAN
region as well as North Asia (specifically, Hong Kong and Taiwan).

You are also aware that the company is looking at other alternative sights in the Asian
region. Aside from the PH, they are seriously looking at Viet Nam.

1. Given that there is potential for the Swedes to work in the PH, what
cultural differences do you see that:

a. may cause friction in a working relationship

b. are practices of Swedish culture or work ethics that should be adapted

2. What can you present that will make them choose the PH over Viet Nam?
