OVERVIEW

The overall goal of the unit is to familiarize the students with principles in Discourse
Studies, by which they will be introduced to another side of language. As their study
gives them the knowledge of English, this unit gives them opportunity to put the
knowledge into practice and to use them to achieve success communication.

By the end of the unit, the students should be able to:

 Define discourse
 Show familiarity with the concepts of discourse
 Demonstrate the familiarity by giving examples
 Illustrate the concepts of discourse in daily life
 Apply the discourse concepts to analyze examples given
 Interpret discourses to gain the possible meanings of the discourse
