Photosynthesis: Trapping

Energy
I.Autotrophs and Sunlight
A. Cells break down carbohydrates to release energy and
form ATP.
1. Carbohydrates are mostly found in the form of simple
sugars, such as glucose.

2. Autotrophs do not take in the sugars, they make them.

3. Autotrophs, such as green plants, algae, and some

bacteria are found in almost every ecosystem.

4. Autotrophs, such as green plants, algae, and some

bacteria are found in almost every ecosystem.

B. Sunlight and Chlorophyll

1. Light is a major ingredient in an autotrophs recipe to
make “food”.

2. Autotrophs trap energy from sunlight and use the

energy trapped to build carbohydrates in a process called
photosynthesis.

3. Sunlight is the natural energy source for

photosynthesis.

4. White light consists of a mixture of colors ranging

from red to orange, yellow, green to blue and indigo to
violet.

5. Objects that appear colored are colored because the

object reflects some of the color of whites and absorbs
others.
C. The green energy trap
1. Chlorophyll is the energy that is stored in the
carbohydrates produced by photosynthesis.

2. Chlorophyll is found in the chloroplasts of green

plants and algae and on membranes in the cytoplasm of
photosynthetic bacteria.

3. A chloroplast is surrounded by two lipid bilayer

membranes.
