STANDARD THREE
MULTIPLICATION WITHIN 2, 3, 4 AND 5
TIMES-TABLES
A. Multiplication as repeated addition
B. Writing Number sentences for multiplication
C. Find the unknown
D. Using multiplication in everyday life
A)MULTIPLICATION AS
REPEATED ADDITION
• Liza’s mother bakes some muffins for her
birthday party.
• The number of muffins is 2 + 2 + 2 = 6

• 2 + 2 + 2 is adding 3 groups of 2.
• We write it as 3 x 2.
• We say it as three times two.
• Liza gives 3 ribbons each to Lina, Lela, Lucy
and Lily.

LINA LELA LUCY LILY

• 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12
• 4 groups of 3 = 12
• 4 threes = 12
• 4 x 3 = 12
• So, there are 12 ribbons.
• Aunty Su has 4 balloons tied together. She
hangs them at 5 different places.

• How many balloons are there?

4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 20
5 groups of 4 = 20
5 fours = 20
5x4 = 20
There are 20 balloons.
B) WRITING NUMBER
SENTENCES FOR
MULTIPLICATION
2 + 2 + 2 =6
• Three times two equals six. There are 6
sweets.
• Number sentence :
3x2=6
• 3 multiplied by 3 equals 9.
• There are 9 cookies.

3 + 3 + 3 =9
Number sentence:
3x3=9
C) FIND THE UNKNOWN
• Help Liza to find unknown numbers in the
number sentences.
1) x 3 = 15
1x3=3
Recall your three times-table.
2x3=6
I know: 3x3=9
5 x 3 = 15 4 x 3 = 12
5 is the unknown number. 5 x 3 = 15

So, x5 x 3 = 15
2) 6 x = 24
6 x 4 = 24
6 x 2 = 12
4 is the unknown number. 6 x 3 = 18
6 x 4 = 24

So, 6 x 4 = 24
D) USING
MULTIPLICATION IN
EVERYDAY LIFE
1. Solve the problems.
There are 4 boxes of shoes.
There are 2 shoes in each box.
How many shoes are there altogether?
1 box shoes.
2
4 boxes 4x 2= 8 shoes
There are 8shoes altogether.
2. Make up a number story from each number
sentence below:

a) 3x2=6
Liza buys three packets of fresh milk.
Each packets contains two bottles of milk.
So, she buys six bottles of milk altogether.
b)
5 x 4 = 20
Munah has five friends. She gives four books
to each of them. She has given 20 books
altogether.
What we have learnt today:
• Multiply numbers as repeated addition.
• Write number sentences.
• Find unknown numbers in multiplication
sentences.
• Use multiplication in daily life.
