Institut Teknologi Bandung to participate in the 2011 Shell Eco-marathon Asia

Institut Teknologi Bandung has officially registered to participate in the 2011 Shell Eco-marathon
Americas event next July 6-9 in Sepang, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. With annual events in the
Americas, Europe and Asia, the Eco-marathon competition challenges high school and college
student teams to design, build and test energy efficient vehicles with the goal of traveling the farthest
distance using the least amount of energy.

The Rakata team from Faculty of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering is made up of 20 students
who are working hard on their Prototype vehicle which they will race in the competition this year. The
Rakata will run on Ethanol 100 in an effort to beat the 2010 record of 2,487.5 miles per gallon of
gasoline, which was set by Laval University in Quebec, Canada.

Teams can enter two main categories in the competition: Futuristic Prototypes and UrbanConcept
vehicles. Prototypes are streamlined vehicles where the primary design consideration is reducing
drag and maximizing efficiency. The UrbanConcept vehicles are built to more conventional four-
wheel roadworthy criteria. Either conventional fuels (such as diesel, gasoline and LPG), or alternative
fuels (such as solar, electric, hydrogen, bio-fuels and GTL) can be used to power vehicles.

The Shell Eco-marathon provides an opportunity for students to have practical experience while
developing skills for their future careers. Many students have gone on to accept engineering
positions and have received scholarships as a result of their participation.

The second annual Shell Eco-marathon Asia event will take place on the international circuit of
Sepang. The track is a modern circuit which has become a place to held international calendar event,
like Formula 1 and MotoGP.

121 vehicles 13 counties have registered for the 2011 Shell Eco-marathon Asia event in Sepang.
Students from across the Pakistan, Thailand, Japan and China also plan to participate in the event.

The event is free and open to the public. Anyone who is interested is welcome to attend to see the
vehicles and watch the students and teams in action.
