Thank you once again Mr.Adhikari....

Well, I am designing a tank for my client city sewarge department, and interestingly they
have asked me to design it for the worst case senario. I am thinking the worst case
scenario will be when the tank is surrounded by water-logged soil to its full height i.e.,
4.5 m.

Here is what I did (all the soil data was assumed and i was told it is ok to assume because
getting the soil report will take time).

Unit Weight of Soil 18000 N/m3

Unit Weight of Water 9810 N/m3
Angle of Repose 6
Height of fill = a= 4.5 m

Maximum Soil Pressure

γ . a . (1-SinΦo) 65668.92 N/m2

(1+SinΦo)

SI No Co - eff Weight of Soil Height Moment (N-m)

for Max γ. a. Ka (a)
Moments N/m2 m
Mx -0.040 65668.9 4.5 -53564.17
At y = 0 x/a = 1
My -0.033 65668.9 4.5 -43244.96
At y=b/2; x/a = 1/2
From Cracking Stress consideration an overall depth to satisfy M = 1/6 f bd2

f= 1.7 N/mm2
b= 1000 mm
D= mm

m
Thickness reqd D = 434.80
m

A wall thicknes of about 450 mm seems to be too thick for me. This tank is also acting as
a sewer manhole and there are about 30 of them to be built in the entire city.

Considering the Tank empty condition I am getting a wall thickness of about 375 mm.

Any advise here?

Prakash
