    Thank you for contactingmy District Office in regardsto the proposedplans to rename
    the QueensboroughBddge in honor of Former Mayor Ed Koch and rename the
    Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel in honor of Former Govemor Hugh Carey.

    New York City and New York Stateare curently suffering a major budget crisis. Mayor
    Michael Bloomberg recently announceda two year salary freeze for all city workers and
    former Govemor David Pattersonplanned to lay off 900 state,employeesin coming
    months. Fire Houses and Police Stationsare facing closure and cut backs. Earlier this
    year the City Council debatedclosing libraries and public pools.

    While it is a distinguishedhonor to name a landmarkafter a personwho had a significant


    impact on their city, renamingthesecrossingsentailsmore than a ceremony.Hundredsof
    road signs and documentsneed to be changed,by workers whose time would be better
    spent repairing our roadways.The cost associatedwith these materials and man hours
    takesaway from our parks and schools.

    I believe that it is the wrong time for the City and Stateto bestowthis honor upon Former
    Mayor Koch and Former Governor Carey. I will continue to speak out in favor of
    responsiblespendingand advocatein lavor ofa governmentthat is more responsiveto its
    citizens. However, that does not diminish the contributions of these two sreat New
    Yorkers. Their honorsare well deserved.ifnot well timed.
