Bipolar Statistics

c In America, 5.7 million adults are affected by bipolar which


is about 2.6% of the population in the U.S.
c Age of onset (median) is 25 years old but illness can start in
early childhood or as late as 40·s & 50·s

c Bipolar is more common in youth than in adults.

c According to statistics, 20% of the youth deal with major


depression, will get Bipolar within a 5-year frame from the
start of depression.
c 3.4 million children & young adults who have depression
-> may lead to bipolar disorder
ow Brain/Body Is Affected

c Bipolar disorder affects how the brain functions normally. Someone who is bipolar, has
constant changes in their mood if there are changes in their lives.

c According to the Mayo Clinic, the brain of a person who isn·t affected, is structured
differently from the brain of a person with bipolar disorder.

c People with bipolar disorder have lack of sleep, loss of sex drive and loss of appetite.

c When there are changes in sleep activity, for example, if a teenager with bipolar disorder
only gets 5 hours of sleep, they will result in having a maniac episode. This kind of
change causes a chemical in the brain to affect the release of melatonin, which gives you
sensation of wanting to fall asleep.

c Appetite increase when in a manic phase, meaning they have high amounts of energy.
But when they are depressed, they have a loss of appetite.

c Increase in libido (sexual desire) in maniac phase, and decrease in libido when in
depressed phase.
