Is Islam the Right Answer?

: The Rise of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egyptian

Politics. Michigan Academy of Science, Arts, and Letters Annual Conference. Wayne State
University, Detroit, MI. March 2009.

Abstract

The central question of this paper concerns how the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt became so
popular as to have won a significant amount of seats in the Egyptian congress, even though they
are not an officially recognized political organization. The more specific question regarding the
status of the Muslim Brotherhood is how they attained such political success in the current
Mubarak Administration since they have not only been oppressed politically by this
administration but by previous administrations as well. The argument put forward by this paper
will be that the Muslim Brotherhood transformed from being a typical neo-conservative Islamist
movement towards more Modernist ideals. This paper will demonstrate the difference between
Islamists and Modernists and show how The Muslim Brotherhood’s values have changed over
time. While I think that it is very important to include a historical background on the Muslim
Brotherhood of Egypt as reported in articles and books devoted to the subjects, this paper will
look at how this particular administration deals with the Muslim Brotherhood and if any
particular action (or inaction) on their part is the reason for the surge in their popularity.
Previous relationships, such as the banning and imprisonment by Nasser in the 1950s and their
release by Sadat in the 1970s, will be taken into account as to show a timeline of government
relations but only as a foil to their current and more amiable relationship to Mubarak. Their
change in values, coupled with their relationship with an unpopular government will show how
the group has come to be so popular in recent years.
