Dislocations (line defects)

Defects due to slip on a crystal plane. Two main types: edge and screw.
a) perfect crystal; b) mixed dislocation; c) screw dislocation; d) perfect
crystal with surface step.

Burgers vector
Burgers circuits of an edge dislocation [(a) and (c)] and a screw e
dislocation [(b) and (d)].

Climbing

Partila dislocation in fcc lattices.

Two lattice planes. Top: dislocation line visibile, row of atoms missing.
Below: slip of a group of atoms causes dissociation of dislocation into two
partials (Burgers vector < interatomic distance).

Model to compute the dislocation energy.
