Apostol Score:
Yr. and Section: IV-Diamond Date: February 23,2011
Activity # 1
I. Title : Buoyancy
II. Problem : What is/are the factors affecting the buoyant force?
III. Hypothesis : The factors affecting the buoyant force are the following:

 Volume of the body submerged in the liquid or volume of the liquid

displaced
 Density of the liquid
 Acceleration due to gravity

IV. Materials : Four big transparent materials or beakers, block of wood

(4cm x 2cm x 2cm), spring balance, two solutions (sugar solution, salt
solution), oil, water
V. Procedures : ( Refer to the given/Activity Sheet)
Observation:
Weight of the block of wood in air : 0.5 N
Beaker Initial Final Difference Weight in Difference

Level (cm) Level (cm) Level (cm) W,(N) (N)

D 125 148 23 0.5 0.5

Guide Questions :
1. In what liquid does the block weigh less?
Answer : The liquid with salt solution.
2. What does the difference in water level indicate?
Answer : Displacement of the object to the water.
3. What makes the block of wood weigh less in the four liquids?
Answer : The buoyant force of the wood.
4. Weigh the water displaced by the block of wood or cylinder. What have
you obtained? What can you infer from the result?
Answer : The water displaced by the block of wood or cylinder starts to rise
when wood is in it. The block of wood has weight and mass and also it has
density.
VI. Generalization/Conclusion : I therefore conclude that the Volume of the
body submerged in the liquid or volume of the liquid displaced,Density of
the liquid and the acceleration due to gravity are the factors affecting the
buoyant force.
