New MDE Curriculum launched in
fall 2007…
As most of you are aware, this fall the UMUC
Graduate School launched a curriculum re-design,
which also changed the MDE structure. The main
features of this re-design include:

How does this affect you?
If you started your program prior to Fall
2007, you have the option of changing to
the new curriculum or follow the curriculum
you were following prior to fall 2007. The
advantage of changing will depend on how
many courses you have already
completed. If you have taken courses that
belong to different specializations, you

otherwise you will need to take more than
36 credits to complete your program. More

EDEN annual Conference, June
2007, Naples
The 4th Annual US-China Forum will take place at
UMUC-Adelphi headquarters on June 23 to 25.
Several MDE faculty members were present,
including Thomas Huelsmann, Uli Bernath, Stella
Porto, Gila Kurtz, Dianne Conrad, Olaf Zawacki-
Richter, and Ulf-Daniel Ehlers. You can find other

Upcoming US-China Forum at
UMUC Adelphi, June 2008
The 4th Annual US-China Forum will take place at
UMUC-Adelphi headquarters on June 23 to 25.
The conference is co-hosted by the China Youth
Center for International Exchange, and the China
University Distance Education Committee of China
Educational Technology Association.
The conference will cover mega trends and
innovation in distance education for sustainable
growth, including advances and innovation in
pedagogy, technological innovation and
development, organizational services and faculty
support, international partnerships in distance
education and globalization through distance

 education. The conference will also include a
Chinese art exhibit and a meet-and-greet with
Chinese Ambassador, Zhou Wenzhong.
Stella Porto will work as the program committee
chair. The Call For Papers should be up on the
website very soon. UMUC students and faculty will
have discounted registration prices.

Upcoming EDEN Research
Workshop, Paris, October 2008
The 5th EDEN Research Workshop will take place
in Paris, October 24-28 2008. The theme will be
"Researching and promoting access to education
and training: the role of distance education and e-
learning in technology-enhanced environments."
The MDE anticipates having a significant
participation both through its faculty members as
well as its graduates publishing their latest
research results.
Accepted papers will be published by the
conference organizers. The Series Editors of the
ASF Series on Distance Education negotiate are in
the process of negotiating the publication rights
with the conference organizers.
The conference papers of the previous (4th) EDEN
Research Workshop in Castelldefels / Spain 25-28,
2006 also were published in the ASF Series as:

EFMD-CEL awarding ceremony
This past June, in Brussels we had the pleasure to
receive the EFMD CEL award during the EFMD annual

conference. Dr. Stella Porto and Dr. Nick Allen were
present to receive the award. Dr. Bernath was also
present as a CEL auditor.

New to the MDE Faculty group
We would like to welcome the following new faculty to
our group…
Dr. Dianne Conrad
Dr. Dianne Conrad has been a practicing
adult educator for over 25 years. As a
college instructor in Northern Alberta, she
developed curriculum, counseled students,
and taught a wide range of subjects to
adult learners who were resuming their
education at high school and college level.
During this time, she resumed her own
education by enrolling in a distance adult
education program.
Dr. Susan Ko
Following the completion of this credential,
Dr. Conrad completed a masters degree in
adult education and a PhD in Educational
Administration and Leadership at the
University of Alberta. From 1989 to 2002,
she was employed at the University of
Alberta as an administrator responsible for
the design, delivery, and management of

continuing education programs in adult
education and communications, from non-
degree to graduate degree levels. During
this time, Dr. Conrad taught in distance
education programs at several universities,
using many delivery methodologies and
moving from correspondence, audio-
conference, and videoconference to
today's e-learning.
Her interest in watching adult learners
adapt to online learning techniques
prompted her doctoral research in the
formation of online community. Since
completing her dissertation entitled
Community, Social Presence, and
Engagement in Online Learning (2002), Dr.
Conrad has continued to research in this
area and has published many journal
articles in Canadian and international
journals. In 2003, she was awarded the
Charles Wedemeyer Award for Excellence
in Research by the University of Wisconsin
in Madison, Wisconsin, USA. Her
definitions of and commentary on
continuing education and online education
can be found in the 2005 version of the
Encyclopedia of Adult Education (London:
Palgrave Macmillan).
Currently, Dr. Conrad is the Director of the
Centre for Learning Accreditation at
Canada’s Open University, Athabasca
University. She continues to research and
write on topics related to online learning
and sits on several national boards with
interests in adult, distance, and continuing
education and prior learning assessment
and recognition.
A confirmed-although-not-native Albertan,
she lives comfortably in the aspen forest in
the small town of Athabasca, Alberta. She
has 3 grown children who range in location
from Southern Ontario to Louisiana, two
small grandsons, and a cat.
Susan Ko has been Executive Director of
the Center for Teaching and Learning at
University of Maryland University College
since October 2003. She is also a
Collegiate Associate faculty member at
UMUC, teaching courses in Asian Studies
for the School of Undergraduate Studies
and UMUC Asia before her current work in
the MDE program of the Graduate School
of Management and Technology.

She has a doctorate from Yale University
in Chinese language and literature and
previously spent more than ten years
teaching world literature, Asian Studies,
and humanities in the California State
University system. Her teaching
experience included both traditional face-
to-face programs as well as distance
education. Dr. Ko began teaching online in
1997 and was responsible for developing
and teaching several of the core courses in
UCLA Extension's pioneering Online
Teaching certificate program. She also
spent more than five years working in the
area of faculty development in the for-profit
education sector before coming to UMUC.
Dr. Ko is co-author with Steve Rossen of a
leading book on the subject of online
teaching entitled Teaching Online: A
Practical Guide ,now in its 2nd edition from
Houghton Mifflin.
Ms. Lisa Blaschke
This year, Lisa collaborated with Linda
Smith, another MDE graduate, in
monitoring the MDE alumni network. In this
context they organized two MDE alumni
events:
• How to Be A Successful Consultant:
Outside and Inside with Judy Roberts,
• Getting Published in DE Journals and
at DE Conferences with Ulrich Bernath
and Som Naidu.
(Both event recordings are available
on the alumni website.)
As part of the project, Lisa and Linda also
monitored online activity and developed
and conducted a survey of MDE alumni. In
the summer of 2007, Lisa joined
Oldenburg faculty as a co-instructor for
OMDE601 Foundations of Distance
Education, which she teaches together
with Christine Walti.

Lisa’s consulting activities recently
culminated with the much-awaited release
of the new SAP® business software
solution for midsize companies. Her
primary consulting role has been to design
and develop e-learning and blended
learning solutions for the company’s
international sales force in preparation for
the September launch of the product. Her
project management and development
responsibilities have also included design
and development of the product’s internal
statement of direction, as well as extensive
marketing collateral, such as customer
website content, white papers, positioning
and messaging documents, and business
blueprints.
Lisa Blaschke is head of a communications
consulting company, Kreative
Kommunikations, which offers a wide
range of distance education services, from
e-learning design and development to
project management. Lisa has over 20
years experience working within
international corporate environments,
leading and implementing enterprise-wide
knowledge management and training
solutions. Her career experience has been
varied, ranging from hands-on practical
technical writing and instructional design to
global management of e-learning and
blended learning projects. Lisa is one of
the early graduates of the Master of
Distance of Education (MDE) program and
also holds a Bachelor of Science in
Technical Communication from the
University of Minnesota. She is a senior
member of the Society of Technical
Communication (STC) and has published
numerous papers/workshops through the
organization. Lisa was born and raised in
Wisconsin, then moved to Germany in
1990 to work for a small software company
called SAP. She currently lives with her
family on the edge of a forest in the
German Odenwald.
Dr. Ulf-Daniel Ehlers
Ulf studied English, Social Sciences and
Educational Sciences at the University of
Bielefeld where he finished his Ph.D. on
“Quality in E-Learning” in 2003. He works
as an assistant professor for the
Department for Business Information
Science at the University Duisburg-Essen,
and is currently the coordinator of
European research projects. Since this
summer he is an adjunct professor of the
UMUC and will teach courses on quality
management and assessment in distance
education.
Ulf is an internationally recognized
researcher and innovator in the area of E-
Learning, and is the Vice-president of the
European Foundation for Quality in E-
Learning. In his research he developed the
Learners’ Quality Model for e-learning,
which is a basis for learner centred quality
development in e-learning. He is the
author/ publisher of several books and
more than 50 articles and book chapters,
has been a featured speaker at numerous
international conferences, and is member
of several professional associations for e-
learning and education. Ulf will be teaching
the course “Assessment and Quality
Assurance in Distance Education” in the
MDE Programme. The course studies
quality assessment and quality assurance
in distance education and education in
general. It will cover the state of the art
methodological approaches (including
quality assessment techniques, quality
evaluation, quality criteria and guidelines,
quality benchmarks, and quality
management approaches) as well as best
practice examples in form of case studies.
Topics also include the connection
between accreditation and quality.

Keeping you informed…
OMDE 900 – We now are running our student
lounge using a WebTycho classroom shell. It is
called OMDE 900. In there students, discuss
issues such as program planning, professional
development, portfolio building, final project, etc.
This lunge brings together students at different
stages of the program, and it helps increase the
MDE network. If you would like to be part of the
MDE lounge, please send an email to Stella Porto

News from our Alumni

Dianna Smith Heidi Maston

Working with two other collegues from
Capella University Jenna Miley and Margie
Meacham, doctoral and master’s learners
in the School of Education on a model we
designed in one of our courses. We have
been invited to share our model and some
of our tools with the ASTD Benchmarking
Forum by MJ Hall, who administers the
forum. This is a webinar that is taking
place on August 1 2007. In addition to this
we will be presenting a paper at the SALT
Conference

this year.
Voted in by ADEC - (Alliance for Distance
Education In California) to serve as
"President-Elect" now through April 2008
and will take over the organization as
"President" from April 2008 - April 2010.
Presentation: Summit XIIX in San
Francisco, CA for the Alliance for Distance
Education in California (ADEC) in March of
2007 - "Motivation of the Online Learner"
and included a hands on workshop for all
participants.
