• November 13th- released Aung San Suu Kyi (won Nobel Peace prize in 1991)
• Been in house arrest 15 out of 21 of the last years
• 2009-sentenced for one and a half years because she violated the terms of her
arrest (she didn’t tell the military guards when an American citizen got into her
house)
• released because of good behavior while in detention?
• Headquarters for the National League for Democracy in Yangon—after being
released she visited on Nov. 15

• On the day of her release thousands of people gathered where she lived
• The government removed the barricades around the house and people moved
forward
• But it was illegal for more than five people to gather and
• To support Suu Kyi in public by assembling in such a way
• Police secretly videotaped the crowds
• Order signed by the junta about Suu Kyi’s release but it was delayed because she
insisted on negotiating her own terms
• Invited by the Norwegian Nobel Committee (Nov 13) to give an acceptance
speech for the Nobel Peace Prize she was awarded in 1991. Detainment by the
junta had prevented this from happening previously.
• After her release, President Barack Obama said Suu Kyi was “a hero of mine and
a source of inspiration to all who work to advance basic human rights in Burma
and around the world.”
• The junta changed the county’s name from Burma to Myanmar in 1989
• United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon and British Minister David
Cameron and other world leaders also spoke similarly
• November 14th—first speech after being released, group of over 10,000, at NLD
headquarterslargest unauthorized assembly since 2007 pro-democracy
demonstrations
