Mohamed was able to circumvent Gaddafi's media blackout because he used to own a business
installing satellite dishes (for internet service) in Benghazi. The government had taken over private ISPs
but Mohamed retained his hardware and technical expertise. He later went on to run an Entertainment
complex that featured an icerink, go cart racing and a rock-climbing wall. At the time of the uprising,
Mohamed proceeded to re-install satellite dishes and two-way modems so that he could broadcast to

Mohamed͛s first broadcast on www.livestream.com/libya17febstarted on 19 February 2011 from a

small, hand held laptop computer and headset microphone. He was contacted by a CNN producer and
performed his first live interview with CNN, which was also simulcast on hislivestream. During the
interview, he was asked "what do you want?" by a CNN producer and this was his answer

Mohamed continued to broadcast after the liberation of Benghazi to counter the stories put forth in the
mainstream by and thru the Gaddafi regime. He continued to campaign for a united, free Libya and
worked to establish the first Broadcast Media organization in Libya which he named ͞Libya Al-Hurra͟ TV
(meaning Free Libya). On the morning of 19 March 2011, after hearing shelling had hit a residential
area, Mohamed went to investigate and to obtain images for broadcast.He did not wear protective gear
and was shot by a sniper, resulting in critical injuries.
