• Two emerging trends:
– Real time social network.

– Location based social network (geosocial


network).
What is Geosocial networking?
• A type of social networking in which geographic
services and capabilities such as geo-coding and
geo-tagging are used to enable additional social
dynamics.
• Allowing users to share real-life experiences,
exchange recommendations about places, identify
nearby friends and set up ad hoc face to face
meetings.
• Located based on IP address/ hotspot trilateration
(computers) or texted location information or mobile
phone tracking (mobile phones).
How to use GSN for business
• Connecting
– Providing information about nearby friend,
colleagues or customers on the network allow
serendipitous discovery for impromptu meet-ups
that make fruitful for work.
How to use GSN for business
• Socializing
– Helps you connect with your friends easily,
see where they are and communicate with them
– Help you make friend, meet new people in the
same or nearby places (coffee, bar, restaurant,
cinema,…,).
– Tracking down your friend to know where they
are, what they do.

• Discovering
– Give tips of nearby stores, restaurants, cinemas,
car parking,…
– Tracking and show new places when you do
travel.
– Give traffic information, news around you.

• Promoting
– Local businesses can leverage GSN to attract more
customers.
– Members can get discounts and perks from
businesses by becoming “mayor” or frequenting a
place.
– Sharing special money saving deals for nearby
members.
Technical feasibility
• New positioning technology combining GPS,
Wi-Fi and Cell-ID for both indoor and outdoor.
• Mobile
– GPS system, Wifi and Cell-ID.
– Smartphone-using trend.
• PC
– The emerging of html5 with geolocation feature
will help building web-based apps easily.
Financial feasibility
• Low cost (for the start-up phase).
• Potential revenue:
– Online advertisings (Coffee shops, restaurants,
shopping stores...)
– Providing information for mobile network
providers (Ex: SMS locator of MobiFone does not
work well because of lacking information).
