ART ACADEMY TO GET A BIGGER OTR HOME

Thanks to a group of friends with deep pockets, the Art Academy of Cincinnati is expanding its Over-the-Rhine
home. The Academy has closed a deal on a four-story building on the corner of 12th and Walnut streets that was
most recently owned by Fifth Third Bank. It's directly behind the Academy, which fronts Jackson Street between
12th and 13th, but is separated by a narrow alley. It was a facilities center for the bank but has been sitting empty
for a few years and once housed a mattress factory.

The Academy is mum on who donated the $450,000, saying that the donors prefer to remain anonymous. The
building will house more classrooms, says Nancy Glier, director of administrative services. There isn't a timeline
for its renovation yet.

The Academy, which has always been a small school, has struggled with enrollment since its move from Eden
Park in 2005. Undergraduate enrollment - which is at about 160 - has declined by about 20 percent, and
attendance at community art classes also has dipped. But Glier says there is a bright spot, the school added a
few more graduate students to its rolls.

Jhon Marshall, longtime Cincinnati area teacher, performer and director, marks his retirement with a scholarship
named for him by International Thespian Society.

Marshall served as director of Thespian troupe 1102 at Princeton High School for 15 years, twice hosting the Ohio
Thespian conference and directing full productions and cuttings for the Ohio conference and the annual
International Thespian Festival.

The Jhon Marshall/ITO Achievement Awards will be presented annually to students whose service and talents
make original contributions to the positive image and ideals of International Thespian Society, educational theater,

their schools, communities and/or peers. Marshall says he's "moved beyond words. In all my years as an
educator, all I have ever wanted was to impart a passion upon my students for learning and inspire them to be
successful in their lives, no matter what they do."

CINCINNATIANS ON OHIO ARTS COUNCIL

Two of four appointees to the Ohio Arts Council Board are Cincinnatians. Lois Rosenthal and Geraldine "Ginger"
Warner have been appointed to the council by Gov. Ted Strickland, along with Tom Schorgl of Cleveland and
Susan Saxbe of Columbus. Saxbe, an art consultant, is the board's new chair.

Rosenthal is a well-known arts patron, has served on many local boards and is co-director of Uptown Arts, which
she and her husband, Richard, founded. She's also on the board of the National Underground Railroad Freedom
Center.

Warner has been on the OAC board since 1997, so this was a reappointment. She serves on the boards of
several area arts organizations, including the May Festival and Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and is a member
of the Cincinnati Art Museum Founders Society.

The terms are five years. Other Cincinnatians on the 19-member board are Barbara Gould, whose term ends in
2009, and Ohio Rep. Tyrone Yates. Yates is one of four legislators who serve on the board in an advisory
capacity.
