VARIABLE RELUCTANCE

TACHOGENERATORS
PRINCIPLES
APPLICATIONS
SPECIFICATIONS
PRINCIPLE
• Its and electromagnetic sensor.
• The rotation of the shaft is converted into an
alternating emf in the coil.
• Works on the basis of faraday’s law of
electromagnetic induction which states
“The emf produced circuit in a is proportional
to the rate of change of magnetic flux linked
with it”
WORKING
• Consists of a ferromagnetic toothed wheel attached to the rotating
shaft.
• Coils wound on a soft iron core placed close to the wheel but not in
close contact.
• As the shaft rotates, the toothed wheel turns along with it.
• As the wheel rotates, the air gap between the pickup coil and
changes periodically.
• When the tooth is close to the pole piece, the reluctance of the
circuit is minimum, else it is maximum.
• This cyclic change in the flux linked produces an alternating emf in
the coil.
• The flux liked with the coil is given by Ø = Ø0 + Øa cos(nwt)
• E = -N[d Ø/dt] = -N(d/dt)[Ø]
= N Øa nw sin(nwt).
• Signal conditioning- amplitude is always
affected by the circuit so we generally measure
the frequency of the signal OR pulse shaping
signal conditioner can be used to transform the
output into a sequence of pulses which is
counted using a counter and the number of
counts per unit time is the angular velocity.
SPECIFICATIONS
• Generated voltage/1000rpm
• Accuracy (percentage deviation)
• Maximum measurable speed
• Operating temperature
• Mounting method
– Base mount
– Tapped holes/ faces
– Clamp/ synchro
– Threaded shaft
– Flange
APPLICATION
• Major application is to find out the angular
velocity of rotating shafts.
• They can also be used to measure flow speeds
and flow volume of liquids.
