BEHAVIOUR OF AC ADJUSTABLE SPEED DRIVES TO

EXTERNAL FAULTS

ABSTRACT:
This paper discusses the design of the AC adjustable speed drive and
the behavior of it towards external faults using MATLAB SIMULINK. The AC
adjustable speed drive on which we are working is of field oriented control on
the induction motor drive. The faults that are being applied are: Type A fault,
Type B fault, Type C fault and Type D fault at variable and constant
speed/torque conditions. The results shows the effect of different faults at
different speed/torque conditions on an AC adjustable speed drive and the
overcoming of the effect after sometime. The behavior of the AC ASD during
normal condition operation and fault condition operation is compared and
explained in this paper.

The field oriented speed control of AC induction motor allows

vector control of the AC induction motor running in a closed loop with the
speed/position sensor coupled to the shaft PWM modules. A reference a
frame conversion is used to transform the three- phase stator currents into
two orthogonal components, one to control the flux magnitude and the other
current to control the developed torque.
