Unit 6 Lesson 28

Objective: Percent of change.

In this section, you will learn how to find the percent of change, of a quantity.

A percent of change indicates how much a quantity increases or decreases with respect to the
original amount. If the new amount is greater than the original amount, then we have a
percent of increase. If the new amount is less than the original amount, then we have a
percent of decrease.

FORMULA: PERCENT OF CHANGE

Example 1 Find the percent of change.

Find the percent of change and explain the change as an increase or a decrease.

a) Original amount is 85 b) Original amount is 44

The new amount is 64 The new amount is 74

Solution

a) b) )

This is approximately a 25% decrease. This is approximately a 68% increase.

There is quite a bit, that changes over time. Populations increase or decrease, the number of
students in a classroom changes from year to year and the amount of money a person earns
changes each year.

If you know the original amount and the percent of change, you can find the new amount.

These are the steps to finding the new amount:

• Multiply the original amount by the percent of change.

First

• Add, or subtract, the answer from the first step to the original amount.
Second

Example 2 Using a percent of increase.

The first year that the X-Games were played, in 1997, there were 38,000 spectators. In 2001, four
years later, the number of spectators increased approximately 124%. Approximately, how many
spectators were there in 2001?

Solution

The number of The number

spectators in of spectators The percent
2001 in 1997 of increase

124% = 1.24
Always change the
percent into a decimal.

There were approximately 85,120 spectators at the X-Games in 2001.

Based on how we solved for the new amount in the example above:

• For a p% of increase, multiply the original amount by ( ).

• For a p% of decrease, multiply the original amount by ( ).

Example 3 Using a percent of decrease.

In 1986, the average price of a cell phone was $595.00. By 2006, the average price had decreased
by 91.5%. What was the average price of a cell phone in 2006?

Solution

The price of a The price of

cell phone in a cell phone The percent
2006 in 1986 of decrease

Price in 2006 = Price in 1986 ( )

= 595
= 595
= 50.58

There cell phone cost approximately $50 in 2006.
