I chose the Great Pyramid of Giza because in one of our chapters we studied
Egypt and the pyramids. The Great Pyramid of Giza, also known as the Pyramid of
Khufu and the Pyramid of Cheops, is the largest and oldest pyramid of the three in
the Giza Necropolis.

This pyramid is located in El Giza, Egypt and is the oldest of the Seven Wonders of
the Ancient World. It was believed that the pyramid was built as a tomb for the
Egyptian Pharaoh Khufu of the fourth dynasty. It was built and constructed over a
14 to 20-year period concluding around 2560 BC. Initially at 146.5 meters, the
Great Pyramid was the tallest man-made structure in the world for over 3,800
years, the longest period of time ever held for such a record. The 160 meter tall
spire of Lincoln Cathedral took its place when it was completed in c. 1300.
Tourists today enter the pyramid via the Robbers’ Tunnel dug by workmen
employed by Caliph al-Ma’mun around AD 820. The tunnel goes straight through
the masonry of the pyramid for approximately 89ft, then turns. The Great
Pyramid is surrounded by a complex of several buildings including small pyramids
and other sorts of things.
