Music is an art form that uses sound and has been around for thousands of years. It can affect humans in many ways such as altering emotions, perspectives, and even improving physical performance. Studies show that the pace of music impacts the pace of exercise. Music is also used as a form of therapy. The document then proposes an experiment to test how different genres of music affect memory retention when studying. Four students will be given word lists to remember under different music conditions and the results will be recorded.

It can alter their emotions, let them see through the eyes of another person and even stimulate their minds and bodies to perform better. Studies show that the pace of the music affects the pace of someone’s exercise for those who exercise while listening to music. Music is even used as a form of therapy for those who are prone to seizures, strokes, epilepsy and much more. So? So music has all these incredible affects on the human mind and body. So what if we continue using it for our advantage? Let’s say… studying? Music and Memory
An Experiment by Aurelia Bordet and
Anthea Hickey Do you listen to music when you study?
Do you ever wonder what kinds of music help
your memory work at its best?
Or if silence is the best of them all?
LET’S TEST IT OUT~!
So how are we going to test this? • 4 victims participants: 2 boys, 2 girls (14 y/o) • Given a list of 40 words to remember in 3 minutes • Then given 2 minutes to write as many words as they can remember from the sheet • Each time the students do this, different types of music will play in background at controlled volumes • Record results after each round (%) What kinds of music are you testing? We plan on testing using these genres of music: Pop Rock Rap Classical Techno Heavy Metal Jazz -Silence- So how is this experiment relevant to us? It’s relevant because we’re students!
Students need to study on a regular basis in
order to remember all the things they need to know for exams and for their future careers. Have you ever looked at all your study notes and thought “Is there an easier way to remember this all?!” Well, we’re going to put it to the test! Stay tuned for the results of this experiment later on ;)
(And feel free to volunteer to be part of our experiment!)
