( LIGHT ) ( PUTTING TOGETHER )
1. OVERVIEW

2. SIGNIFICANCE

3. RAW MATERIALS

4. MECHANISM OF PHOTOSYNTHESIS

5. PHOTOSYNTHESIS IN MARINE PLANTS

6. EVOLUTION OF PHOTOSYNTHESIS

7. FUTURE OF PHOTOSYNTHESIS
• If we carefully observe the
food web we find that the
critical source of food is the
plant.

• Not only food but oxygen

required for aerobic
respiration is also produced
by plants.
• Photosynthesis is the conversion of light energy into
chemical energy by living organisms.

• A commonly used but simplified equation for

photosynthesis is:
6CO2 + 12H2O + Photons C6H12O6 + 6O2 + 6H2O
1. LIGHT (PHOTON) 3 .WATER

2 .CARBON DIOXIDE
The exchange of
gases takes place in
stomata, in leaves &
in lenticels, in the
bark of trees
through the process
of diffusion.
Chlorophyll Molecule

Plants absorb light

primarily using the
pigment chlorophyll,
supported by other
accessory pigments
Carotenoids
• The plants absorb water
and minerals from the soil
by means of roots.

• The Transpiration Pull

Theory -
1. Cohesion
2. Tension
• LIGHT REACTION ( HILL REACTION )

• WATER PHOTOLYSIS

• DARK REACTION (CALVIN-BENSON

CYCLE)
• Light energy is
converted to
chemical energy
through the light
dependent
reaction(Hill
reaction).
• The products of the
light reaction are
ATP and NADPH.
Photosystem II
includes the first
step of Z scheme,
an external source
of electrons is
required, which is
water.
• The fixation of carbon
dioxide is a light
independent process.

• Carbon dioxide
combines with a 5 -
carbon sugar,
Ribulose 1, 5-
bisphosphate(RuBP).
In marine plants,
phycobilins( the
accessory pigment )
peak for absorbing
blue green light
which allow them to
grow in deeper
water.
Oxygen in the
atmosphere exists due
the evolution of
oxygenic
photosynthesis, also
called oxygen
catastrophe.
• Artificial photosynthesis -
the next breakthrough in
science promises to be able
to mimic the water splitting
process in labs

• Artificial systems will use

metals such as ruthenium
and iron to capture light.
Some factors affect the rate of photosynthesis in pl
as follows:

1. Temperature

2. Light Intensity

3. Carbon Dioxide concentration
