Water in Motion

3 forms of water
Solid
Liquid
Gas
Evaporation
When liquid water absorbs enough thermal energy, it changes to water vapor
Condensation
When water vapor loses thermal energy, it changes back to a liquid, suspended in clouds as
water droplets
Humidity
Warm air holds a lot of water vapor
Dew Point
The point at which water begins condensation
Precipitation
When the temperature drops, the water vapor loses it energy, condensation occurs, and falls to
the earth
Types of Precipitation
-water
-snow
- hail
-sleet
Hydrologic Cycle
The process of evaporation, condensation, precipitation that is used to replenish the soil, lakes,
and rivers with water
Ground Water
Slow-moving river under the ground
Three situations cause a humid air mass to cool and produce precipitation
1. Presence of mountains (orographic)
2. Meeting of cold and warm air masses
-Front: the line at which two air masses meet
3. Rise of warm air over a hot surface (convection)
