Fear Accompanies Road to

Freedom!

Children of all ages in India and other countries around the world
are still subject to slave labor or debtor’s prison. They work 12
to 15 hours a day six or seven days a week, receiving $2.00 every
two weeks. Some of those children don’t even know how old they
are. The lives of these children revolved around the wishes and
whims of factory owners or land owners.
Sometimes, the parents of these children are forced to send them to
work. “The main problem,” says the Sub-divisional Magistrate
Ranvijay Singh, “is Poverty.” Just a year ago, hard manual labor
filled the life of a 10-year-old boy named Rajkumar. "I was
kneading the mud and made to work at the brick kiln," he said. Now,
instead of having to carry bricks, he gets to carry home books and
dream of a better future. One day, he hopes to work in a job that
will interest him.
Nongovernmental Organizations (NGOs), such as Free the Slaves, are
helping break this cycle of abuse and slave labor.
Why Is This Important To Know?

This is important because no matter what, we are all living human beings
and everyone in this world should be able to have social and economic
freedom and opportunities. Mistreatment of others degrades society.
Children who are forced to work and who are mistreated end up as youth and
later as adults who are unable to contribute their full potential to
society.
