Capps/Jenkins Debate Topic

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all


men are created equal, that they are endowed by
their Creator with certain unalienable Rights,
that among these are Life, Liberty and the
pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these
rights, Governments are instituted among Men,
deriving their just powers from the consent of
the governed, — That whenever any Form of
Government becomes destructive of these ends,
it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish
it, and to institute new Government, laying its
foundation on such principles and organizing its
powers in such form, as to them shall seem most
likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

Affirmative: People have the absolute right to


“alter or abolish” their ruling body.

Negative: People DO NOT have the absolute


right to “alter” or abolish” their ruling body.
Instructions:
1) The members of your team will research history, current events, and literature to
find evidence to use to answer your assigned question. Each member will need to
find four pieces of evidence to use with his or her team.

2) After compiling your sources, your team will decide on your jobs – 1st Speaker,
2nd Speaker, and 3rd Speaker.

3) Next, your team will write the speeches you will use during the debate.

4) Finally, your team will argue against your opponents in a formal public debate.
