Lesson Plan

Week:

Class: 2A, 2G and 2J

Topic: MENSURATION

Subtopic: VOLUME OF PRISM

Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

1. Determine the shape of the cross section.

2. Determine the height of the prism.
3. Calculate the area of the cross section.
4. Calculate the volume of the prism.
5. Calculate the height of the prism, given only the area of the cross section and the volume of the prism.

Materials:

METHODS OF TEACHING:

Step 1  Introduction

The formula for volume of a prism can be written as

Volume of Prism= Area of Cross Section× Height

The formula applies to various types of prisms.

Here are some examples of prisms;

Step 2  Content

Example1: Find the volume of the following solid,

Shape of the cross section:

Area of the cross section;

1
× ( 2+9.5 ) ×10=57.5 cm 2
2
Volume of the solid;

Areaof Cross Section × Height

57.5 cm2 × 15 cm=862.5 cm3

Example2: The volume of a rectangular solid is 576 cm 3. It is 12 cm long and 6 cm wide. Find its height.

Volume=Area of Cross Section × Height

Height =Volume ÷ Area of Cross Section

¿ 576 cm3 ÷ ( 12 ×6 ) cm

¿ 576 cm3 ÷ 72 cm

¿ 8 cm
Step 3  Conclusion

Recap all concept taught in a summary:

 The formula for volume of a prism can be written as

Volume of Prism= Area of Cross Section× Height

Handouts will be given for notes, classwork and homework.
