Dear Student of 2011 – 2012,

This year you will be given 15 power words. Each of them has to
do with school, and how to get through things. It has helped my
understand stories better, and understand writing. The first word is
Trace, which means to follow, discover, or ascertain the course of
development of something. The second word is summarize, which
means you pick out the main parts of the story and put them in
paragraphs. Another one is Evaluate, which means you judge the way
the story is written.

Next, infer which I have struggled with. It’s one of the harder ones
where you have to read between the lines. We had to do an activity, by
making a comic strip. We had to make people say stuff in order of what
happened in the book. Another, describe and visualize go kind of
together. Describe means to tell about and visualize means to form a
mental image in your head. Predict to see what happens next. When
you’re thinking about what’s going to happen next, you form a image in
your head.

Also, Explain and support also go kind of together. Explaining

something tells you how to do something step by step. Supporting
something backs it all up, and has factually information supporting what
you think. Comparing and contrast something is telling you the
similarities and differences. We had to compare and contrast the two
websites that we did; Black History and 15 Power word website. Also,
when you advise something to someone, you are advising them to do
whatever. We are making these letters for next year’s students, and
telling then what to do and what not to do to get a perfect A+.

Next the easiest to me what elaborating about something; it’s

telling more about something to someone. Last but not least is
formulating. Formulate can mean to create. We are creating a video of all
the 15 power words. You either make a rap or singing it out. When you
are doing the website, make sure you pick your partner wisely. Good
luck.

Sincerely,

Bryanna Vazquez
