Huck Finn HW#2

Symbol

In the novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, fog is a symbol that in the
story is used to describe the loneness of a person and how Huck and Jim are a pair, while literally it is a
gaseous water vapor at ground level at street level and it usually causes people to have bad moods; it is
a sign of bad luck and sadness. As Mark Twain wrote, “I couldn’t tell nothing about voices in a fog, for
nothing don’t look natural nor sound natural in a fog” (87). This quote states that Huck wasn’t able to
find Jim in the fog, and all the sounds were distorted so it sounded worst and scarier than they actually
are. Also during this time, they were separated for a while. This moment made it exceptionally scarier
for Huck, since you have this kid in his early teens alone on a canoe. The fog acted as a state of
confusion for Huck as he did not really know what to do. When they finally catch up with each other,
they figure out that they are companions and are meant to help each other on this journey.
