Title : Stages in the germination of seeds

Aim : To study the conditions needed for seed germination
E2 C12 (a)

Problem Statement : What is the conditions that are needed for seed to
germinate ?

Hypothesis : A seed will germinate only if there is water, air and

Variables :
suitable temperature E2 C12 (b)

 Manipulated variable : Conditions for seed germination (presence of
air, water and suitable temperature)
 Responding variable
 Controlled / fixed
: Seed germination
: Type of seed
E2 C12 (c)

Apparatus : test tubes, refrigerator, test tube rack, thread, ruler
E2 C12 (d)

Materials : green peas, cotton, cooled boiled water, labelling paper

Procedure

1. Four test tubes are prepared, labelled A, B, C & D, with their contents as
shown in diagram
2. Test tubes A, B & C are placed in the laboratory. Test tube D is placed in the
refrigerator
3. The seeds are observed/ measured for two days.

Discussion

1. The seeds in which test tube germinated ?

Test tube A

2. Why the seeds in the following test tubes do not germinate?

Test tube B : no water

Test tube C : no air E2 C15 (a)

Test tube D : no suitable temperature

3. State the factors needed for the seeds to germinate.

Seed will germinate when there are water, air and suitable temperature

4. Explain consequence if one of the variables is absent.

If water is absent, the seed will not germinate ( because all three

conditions are required for seed to germinate. ) E2 C15 (b)

Conclusion :
E2 C16 (a)
The hypothesis is accepted.
A seed will germinate only if water, air and suitable
temperature are present.
