OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS Lens Selection anid Mounting You will need to use a Ith af the appropriate focal length for the negative format trom which you will be ‘printing, which you attach fo the lensboard to mount ‘on the enlarger. Remave jam nut fram lens, insert ons through board and firmly screw in jam nut. ‘Note that the bottom of the lens stage contains two retaining strips. With the back edge of the lensboard tied upward, inser into the groove above the rear retaining strip. Push the lensboara back into the ‘groove and raise the front edge until the board is level, A leaf spring in the rear groove will push the lensbaard inio the qraove above the tant retaining strip and hold it in position. Be sure the lensbaard is Securely held at the front and rear of the lens stage. Te remove the lensboard, reverse the procedure See Fig. 7. Inserting the Negative (Fig. 8) ‘The negative is placed in the negative carrier, with ‘the emulsion side down, by sliding it under the pins ‘on the lower plate. A spring in the carrier hinge will Keea the upper plate slightly raised to faciitate insert ing @ negative andfer moving a stip of negatives through the carrier. Toposttion the negative carriarin the enlarger, raise the lamphouse elevating arm. It will automatically lock in an open position. Place the negative carrier on the negative stage and push in until the cartier slots engage the lacating pins at the rear of the stage. Gently lower the tamp- house elevating afr, so that the Lamphouse comes to rest on top of the negative carrier. Fig. ©. Accessory Filter Holder The accessory fier holder, attached below the lens stage, accommodates the standard red safety fer, ‘optional variable contrast and special effect (e.g. soft focus) fiters and light integrators. The red safety filer may be used when chécking Composition and position of the projected image while there is enlarg- ing paper in the easel, (This filter should not be used when working with color or panchromatic black and white papers, as these materials are sensitive tored light) The accessory holder must be positioned directly under the lens or fully swung to the lef, to avoid pantally blocking the projected image. When printing with variable contrast filters in the holder, # is important to focus with the filter in the optical path to avaid a shittin focus, which can occur when the filter is introduced. D. Elevation and focus. Alter the negative has been positioned in the enlarger, the focus may be adjusted by tuning the focusing knob. AA special lock is provided for securing the enlarger cartiage, The lock is operated by rotating the knob clockwise, Turning it completely counterclockwise releases ts braking mechanism, Always release this knob before changing the carriage position. if enly parvally celeased, the gears on the carriage will wear prematurely. To change magnification, release the carriage lack and tum the elevating crank to raise or lower the enlarger carriage to the desired height. ‘An elevation scale is provided on the rightside ofthe enlarger frame to enable you to record the height and to repeat that magnification at a later date. E, Oversize Prints When an extreme degree of enlargement is desired (greater than can be achieved on the baseboard} there are two simple ways to make aversize prints. 1. The enti projection assembly (lamphouse and bellows) can be easily rotated to permit wall pro- jection. The projector pivot locking lever is located ‘on the crass-carriage mounting bracket behind the bellaws. While holding the projection assembly with one hand, use the other hand te swing the lever to he left to unlock the pivot. Rotate the head to the desired position and swing the lever to the right ta lock. Click-stops automatically locate the projection assembly at 0° (full vertical) and 490° (wall projection), 2. The enlarger can be mounted to the baseboard ina reversed position to enable you to project images onto an easel placed on the floor. Fremem- ‘ber to eounterbafance the weight of the entarger with several Ieavy objects on the baseboard or seeurely clamp the baseboard 10 a table befera reversing. Then simply remove the screws holding the enlarger to the base, turn the enlarger 180° and reassemble. (Nate: When enlarger s rotated you will only be securing the frame using the four ‘outermast serews.) Vv. CONDENSER LAMPHOUSE A. The Condenser System ‘The condenser system in the condenser lamphouse consistsof two condensers. The two condensers are ientical; however, when inserting the lower can- denser it will lock'into place when pushed in. To remove for cleaning, lift up at an angle to compress the springs and slide out B. Filter Holder A two-piece filter holder is located above the con- denser. To remove the holder, lift the front edge slightly’and pull straight out. The fiter holder in the Condenser lamphouse has a spring-loaded top frame designed to hold 3%" calor printing (CP), variable Contrast or neutral density filters securely. To insert filter, swing up the frame and insert the filter until it touches the pivot point of the frame. Bow the filter slightly unti it sits in and rests against the two-filter stops, then close the filter frame. The holder is reinserted by placing it in its slot and sliding It back until the front edge drops behind the lip atthe front of the slot, ©. Heat Absorbing Glass A slat is provided in the condenser lariphouse for inserting the optional heat absorbing glass (Cat. #6760) which is highty recommended. The glass aids in protecting the negative from the heat of the enlarging lamp, minimizing any negative buckling, and algo protects the dyes in color negatives and transparencies. VI. DICHRO 67S LAMPHOUSE ‘A. Electrical Connections ‘The Dichro 675 operates off af standard household eurrent and may be plugged directly into the “Enlarger” receptacle on your enlarging timer. If the colorhead is being used in the vicinity of major ‘appliances such as central air conditioners, clothes dryers or electric ranges, tluctuations in the line ‘voltage may resultin undesirable color density shitts ‘on your prints, To protect against these fluctuations. a line voltage stabilizer ig available for usa with the alorhead. The colorhead plugs directly into the stabilizer (Cat. #6731) whieh, in turn, is plugged inte the enlarging timer, B, Components ‘The Dichro 678 lamphouse is composed of thrae assemblies — the housing, the lamp and fiter ‘assembly and the mixing chamber. The lamp and fier assembly is removed from the housing by sliding it up and out of the grooves an either side fof the housing, Then you have access to the mixing chambers, ‘The two interchangeable mixing chambers are dasigned to automatically lock into place within the colomead. The standard 6x7 mixing chamber is already in the colorhead when you receive it ‘Squeeze together the two spring tabs on the mixing ‘chamber while liting the front edge of the chamber slightfy to clear the battom lia. Then pull the mixing ‘chamber straight out. Insart the other mixing char ber and push straight back. The chamber will drop in and the spring tabs will lock in place. Stide the lamp ‘and iter assembly back into the colorhead housing. ‘The 35mm mixing chamber doubles the light output {for 3mm and smaller format negatives and slides and is recommended for use with ''slow”” printing materials whieh eften require greater than normal light intensity or unusually long printing time. Filtration By turning the appropriate knob on the Dichro 67S. lamphouse, any desired amount of cyan, magenta or yellow fitration may be introduced into the light path, ‘Tha window's above the knobs are color-coded to the color of fitration they control, and shaw the value of filtration selected far that color, Supplementary fitra- tion of any type may be placed in the accessory holder belovr the lens, but this fitration must be of optical quality glass, gelatin or plastic. D. White Light Lever Inorder to facilitate focusing or composing, its often desireable to temporarily rernove filtration trom the light path. This can be done with the Dichro 67S lamphouse without disturbing the filter settings by Using the white light lever on the right sido of the colorhead. Pulling the laver toward you will remove the fitters trom the light path, Pushing the lever back will restore filtration to the values indicated on the dials. Be certain t0 return the fiters to the light path before exposing your print, E. Color Printing ‘The objective in color printings usually to repraduce the colors in a photograph to match, as nearly as possible, the colors af the original subject. In order to accomplish this, i is almost always necessary to make adjustments to the color of the light source used to expose the color paper. A color analyzer can help determine the correct fitration and exposure time for a well-balanced print from your color negative or slide, See your dealer or check the inside back cover of this manual for more details ‘Once you have determined your fitration values and exposure time, the Dichro 67S lamphouse lets you simply dial in the proper fitration and expose yaur print, without having to handle conventional GP filters that ean get easily seratched or dirty ‘The Correction Table shows what adjustments are necessary to color-carrect prints made from negatives ‘oF slides, Experience will show how much of an adjustment is necessary for prints requiring varying degrees of correction and what starting filter pack touse in making a frst print. (Color paper manufac- turers usually suggest a starting fiter pack for use with their paper.) COLOR CORRECTION TABLE iirst print ] Or the tist ‘mage from | print made anogative | from a slide | Make this correction before isto: | is too: exposing the next print Yellow | Blue ‘Add Yellow or Subtract Gyan and Magenta, ‘Add Magenta or Subtract ‘Cyan and Yellow Magenta | Green Gyan Red [Add Cyan or Subtract Yellow and Magenta Blue Yellow [Subtract Yellow or Ada Cyan and Magenta Green| Magenta | Subtract Magenta or Add Cyan and Yellow Red Cyan ‘Subtract Cyan oF Add Yellow and Magenta ‘Note that there are two possibilities for each correc: tion on the table. Do not make a correction which results in more than two fiters being used at any one time. If all three filers are used at the same time, they will cancel out each other, resulting in neutral density filtration and loss of illumination, Ifyou have just started oolor printing, it is & good idea to save those prints with which you are not satisfied, On the back of these-prints, mark the fill: tion and exposure with which they were made and compare them to your final prints. This is the best method of learning the effects af changing filtration (arid exposure) on your Dichro 67S lamphouse. F. Black and White Printing ‘Your Dichro 35S lamphouse can be used as a diffu. sion black ard white printing system by setting the filtration knobs at zero or retracting the fiters withthe \white light lever. Diffusion enlargers, when used for black and white, produce a somewhat lass contrasty print and minimize graininess. They alsatend ta con- eal dust and scratches on the negative, and are ‘essential when retouching has been done directly on. the negative. Itis generally desirable to set all fitration dials to get readauls as close as possible to “000” during black and white printing. When printing with variable con- trast papers, the colorhead can be used to control the contrast, without the need cl an adcliional set of iter. The tables below show what filtration settings will approximate various paper grades an Agfa Mullicon- trast, eed Mulligrade, or Kodak Polycontrast papers. ADJUSTMENTS ‘Your enlarger has been fully adjusted and aligned at the factary and should require no further adjusiments. I it does become necessary to make adjustments to the enlarger in the future, rater ta the appropriate sec- tion below. A. Focusing Mechanism H the focusing mechaniem is too stit, it will be dif ult to critically focus, To adjust the focusing mech- anism, use a Ye" open end wrench and loosen or tighten the head screws at the battom of each focus- ing spring as needed (see Fig. 10}. Try not to have ‘one spring much tighter or looser than the other. Alignment of Negative Stage Inorder to ensure flatness af field itis important that the negative stage and lens stage be parallel to the baseboard. To adjust the negative stage, loosen (do ‘not remove) the two Phillips head screws on each side of the negative stage (Sea Fig. 11). The entire negative stagefiens assembly may then be tited from side to side and front to back until the required con- ditions are met. Place a small sheet of glass or other suitable abso- lutely tat surface in the negative stage for use as @ reference point for comparison measurements with the baseboard Check your adjustments) with a carpenter's square or triangle to make sure both sides and front and back of the negative stage are equally distant from the baseboard. Tighten the screws to secure the assembly in this position. PHILLIPS HEAD SCREWS: Fig. 1 C. Alignment of the Lens Stage Ones the negative stageis adjusted and parallel with the baseboard, the lens stage shauld be checked. insert a blank lensboardin the lens stage and check {eont to back and side to side alignment with respect to the baseboard. To adjust for front to back align: ‘ment, use a 1/16” Allen wrench and locate the three lens stage alignment screws behind the bellows (see Fig, 12). i may be more convenient ta unhook the four bellows retaining clip attaching the bellows to the negative stage while making this adjustment. The two lower screws should bé adjusted equally together and opposite in relation to the adjustment required to the upper serew. The two lower screws by themselves will adjust centering of the lens left to right, Reconnect the bellows when you are finished. To adjust for side to side alignmnent, use a Ye" open fend wrench and loosen the twolens stage tit adjust- ment serews al the bottom of the rear of the focus rail (see Fig, 10). Tighten the lower screw slightty betore adjusting alignment. Once aligned, retighten both stews to lock, Front View of Stages & Bellows Assembly (Only Outline of Bellows Shawn) Ballows Retaining lias (4) Lens Stage ‘Alignment Screws (3) D. Aligning Carriage in Frame U1 the carriage should ever need to be realigned (that is, felther gear on the carriage should jump a toath on the track), eorrect it as follows: Remove the two screws halding the right hand goar guard. Pull the guard avray trom the frame and push the right side of the carriage toward the back of the enlarger. This will disengage the right gear fram the track and ‘may be engagedin the correct position. Replace 1 uard and the two scrows. Vill. MAINTENANCE Your Beseler enlarger is designed to give years of wouble-fee service; maintanance is minimal. Your enlarger should be kept free of dust to ensure high quality, clean prints, A heavy Pliofilm transparent dust tover (Cal. #8047)is available trom your Beselor dealer Should any dust settle on the enlarger wipe off with an anti-static cloth, such as Color by Beseler Anti-Static ‘Goth (Cat. #8956). ‘A. Lamp Replacement CAUTION: Be certain that the lamp has cooled sut- ficiently for handling before attempting to remove. Discannect power cord from AG source. 1. Condenser Lamphouse (67SC-KL) When the lamp in your condenser head burns out, replace with @ PH140 lamp, 75W, 117V (Beseler Cat, #8101) or, for 220 volt versions, a PH1400, 75W lamp (Beseler Cat. #8114). To replace the lamp, slide the lamphouse door oft ‘and remove the upper Cendenser and the filter holder to assure easy access. Unscrew the old lamp and screw in the new lamp. Replace filter holder, upper condenser and lamphouse door 2. Dichro 67S Lamphouse (S7SD-XL) When the lamp in your colorhead burns out, replace with an ESJ lamp, BOW, B2V (Bescler Cat. #6728), To replace the tamp, slide the lamp and filter assembly fram the housing. Pushing the relamp- ing lever (see Fig. 13) toward the base of the amp will extract the lamp from the socket. The Tamp may then be pulled from its holder. When replacing lamps, bé careful not to touch the bulb fr the insice of the reflector, as this may lead to scorching and premature lamp failure. If you should accidentally touch the bulb, wipe clean with 2 soft cloth and alcohol. Slide the new lamp into the helder as far as it will go so that the pins at the lamp base fully engage the socket, Slice the assembly back into the housing. C. Luba lamping Lever Lod Fig. 19 B.
