Know the techniques

used by coaches to
improve the
performance of
athletes
Modelling
• Used when coaches want to display exactly
what they wish the athlete to achieve
• Modelling can be delivered in two different
forms, coach or performer demonstration OR
video demonstration
• The model is an example of the skill, technique
or activity which the coach would like the
athletes to master
An example of this would be if a coach created a
session to try and create an athletes ability to
carry out a rugby tackle more effectively and
safely.
A coach would use a model of the action to show
learners what is expected of them.
• Modelling skills are used to paint a picture in
the athletes minds, this is when its most
effective.
• Point out key technical instructions for the skill
or activity the coach would like them to
achieve.
Dartfish Technology
• Provides an opportunity to slow down
movements and freeze actions, allowing
coaches to slow down movements and freeze
actions.
• This allows coaches to demonstrate complex
skills.
• It can also show two performances
simultaneously to compare techniques.
Adapting practices to meet
individual needs
• A coach must be able to supports the varying
needs and aspirations of all athletes who
attend their sessions.
• Every player within a team will have different
methods of learning, its the coaches
responsibility to make sure that everyone gets
the same amount of coaching.
• That way performances will be more effective.
• It doesn’t mean creating different session plan
for every athlete.
• The coach should take time to learn how their
athletes learn and which components of the
game needs support.
• A coach needs to be tactful, so that no one
feels embarrassed or uncomfortable.
• Makes athletes feel comfortable with coaching
sessions.
• May not always be effective because its hard
to get to know every player inside of a rugby
squad.
• Could miss important parts to a players
learning methods.
Designing effective practice sessions
• Athletes enjoyment, interest and motivation
• To achieve this should balance technical
development, simulated practices and
competitive situations
• Athletes need to enjoy but coaches need to
ensure the practice of skills, techniques and
tactics
• Coaching sessions need to differ with athletes
depending on age and ability
• However the coach needs to take note of
individual needs.
