First Nations Communities with Drinking Water Advisories as of December 34, 2010 Validated by regions; updated on Jan 14, 2011 The number of Drinking Water Advisories in First Nations communities across Canada fluctuates, as water quality is not static and frequently changes. Based on the data gathered on December 31, 2010, 147 Gommunities had a Drinking Wale’ Advisoryj.312 communities had Boil Water Advisories) § ‘communities had Do Not Consume Advisories. Drinking Water Advisories are preventive measures to protect public health from waterborne contaminants that could be, or are known to be, present in drinking water. They include Boil Water Advisories (BWA), Boil Water Orders (BWO) and Do Not Consume (DNC) Advisories. Boil Water Advisories and Orders are a way to advise the public that they should boil their tap water for drinking and for other uses, such as brushing teeth. Do Not Consume Advisories are a way to advise the public that they should use an alternative source of drinking water, like bottled water, for drinking and for other uses. A Boil Water Advisory, Do Not Use Advisory and a Do Not Consume Advisory are recommended by an Environmental Health Officer employed by Health Canada or a First Nation. A Boil Water Order may be issued by a Medical Officer of Health. It is important to note that a Drinking Water Advisory in a First Nation community can affect as little as one building and does not always represent a community-wide drinking water problem. The number of Grinking Water Advisories issued on First Nation community water systems across Canada fluctuates, as water quality is not static and frequently changes. Drinking Weter Advisories are put in place for various reasons; examples of which include line breaks, equipment failure, absence of trained Water Treatment Plant Operator or Community-based Water Quality Monitor, and unacceptable chlorine residuals. Note (4): The reasons listed below for Drinking Water Advisories indicate the reasons Health Canada originally recommended these advisories be put in place, and are not necessarily reflective of the ‘current situation following any corrective measures or upgrades that may have occiltred in addressing the issue. For further information on remedial action taken in these communities, please contact indian and Northem Affairs Canada and/or Health Canada, Note (2): The date set represents the day that the Drinking Water Advisory was issued by the First Nations community. Drinking Water Advisories could have been set and revoked prior to these dates. Note (3): Actonyiis ‘Used for Water systems!
