The Warsaw Ghetto

I. Introduction

a. Created to contain Jews

i. Jews were segregated by a badge they had to wear

b. Slum of Warsaw

i. Wall built around the area

i. Secret classes were held

i. Plumbing was broken, so human waste was in the streets

1. Children would break through walls to get food to smuggle back

2. Was very dangerous

a. If caught the smugglers would be severely punished

III. Jewish council was in charge

a. Appointed by Nazi police

b. Had to follow out Nazi orders

i. If orders were not followed, Jewish lives were threatened

IV. Jews deported to Treblinka

a. Hundreds of thousands deported

b. 60,000 remained

V. Warsaw ghetto uprising

a. Jews set up an armed resistance against the Nazis once they found out more jews

were going to be deported

i. Smuggled in weapons

ii. Set up posts

iii. Made a detailed plan

b. Resistance held up pretty good

VI. End of the ghetto

a. Nazi troops invaded the ghetto to end the uprising

i. They bombed buildings and shot anyone they saw

b. Ghetto ended up in rubble

c. Ghetto was searched so that anyone alive would be killed
