PHY111 Homework -3

PART-A
1.(a) When two unknown resistors are connected in series with a battery, the battery delivers
225W and carries a total current of 5.00 A. For the same total current, 50.0 W is delivered when
the resistors are connected in parallel. Determine the value of each resistor
(b) A battery has an emf of 9.20 V and an internal resistance of 1.20Ω. (a) What resistance across
the battery will extract from it a power of 12.8W? (b) A power of 21.2W? Explain your answers
2. Taking R=1 kΩ and ε =250V in Figure,
determine the direction and magnitude of the
current in the horizontal wire between a and
e. Also find potential difference across each
resistor..
3. The circuit in Figure has been connected
for several seconds. Find the
current (a) in the 4.00-V battery,
(b) in the 3.00-V resistor, (c) in the
8.00-V battery, and (d) in the 3.00-
V battery. (e) Find the charge on
the capacitor.

PART-B
4. One electron collides elastically with a second electron initially at rest. After the collision, the
radii of their trajectories are 1.00 cm and 2.40 cm. The trajectories are perpendicular to a uniform
magnetic field of magnitude 0.0440 T. Determine the energy (in keV) of the incident electron.
5. A wire is formed into a circle having a diameter of 10.0 cm and is placed in a uniform
magnetic field of 3.00 mT. The wire carries a current of 5.00 A. Find (a) the maximum torque on
the wire and (b) the range of potential energies of the wire–field system for different orientations
of the circle
6. A singly charged ion of mass m is accelerated from rest by a potential difference ∆V. It is then
deflected by a uniform magnetic field (perpendicular to the ion’s velocity) into a semicircle of
radius R. Now a doubly charged ion of mass m´ is accelerated through the same potential
difference and deflected by the same magnetic field into a semicircle of radius R´ = 2R. What is
the ratio of the masses of the ions?
