PLANT-BASED

BIOREMEDIATION

Presented by
Kashmala ilyas
• Plant-based remediation, sometime called
phytoremediation.
• Examples of plants in bioremediation are:

Chlorinated Hydrocarbons
• Anderson et al. 1993 observed that microbes
from rhizosphere soil of several species of
plants were able to degrade TCE better then
those from nonrhizosphere soil.
Aromatic hydrocarbons

• Sims and other (aprill and sims, 1990; ferro

et al., 1994) explored the ability of grasses to
enhance degradation of aromatics.

• Prairie grasses stimulated degradation of

polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)
• Crested wheatgrass when grow:it can
stimulated degradation of pentachlorophenol.

• Alfalfa appeared to be the most effective

species against Aromatic Hydrocarbons
Herbicides
• Nair et al (1993) examined mineralization and
uptake of atrazine by poplars.
Heavy metals
• Berti (1993) describe efforts to screen plant
species for their ability to accumulate lead.

• Pierzynski and coworkers are attempting to

use hybrid poplars to stabilize zinc smelter
wastes in Kansas and to immobilize the co
contaminant lead at such sites.
