The states posted restrictions on blacks. The 14th amendment is passed in attempt to
end these black codes. No interracial marriage. Blacks could not testify against courts
against whites, blacks could not serve on a jury.
Johnson Veto
Johnson vetoes the Civil RIghts, His veto of the freedman’s bureau is overwritten. In
1866 republicans gained both houses. He violates the Tenure of Office act.
Fourteenth Amendment.
Johnson’s swing around the circle. All states must follow. Confederate debt is voided. In
terpretation was used to keep states from unfairly regulating them.
