Creature Trouble

by Rachel Yip

Ten o’clock – it was a peaceful night,

Windows opened, the moon shining bright.

Sat on the sofa reading a book,

For similes I was on the look.

Suddenly my brother gave a scream,

I looked up and dropped my ice-cream.

But when I saw what approached,

I screamed also
“Ah! A cockroach!”

I ran to my room and shut the door,

As if there was a dinosaur.

A shout of triumph filled the hall,

After that came my brother’s call.

“Rachel, Rachel you can come out,

The creature is caught without a doubt.

The worst of all the things had passed,

Our aunt had caught it in a wine glass.”

The horror passed, I was filled with glee,

A feeling of relief washed over me.

Happily, I threw open the door,

Gone had the monstrous dinosaur.

What was left? An insect in a glass,

Fluttering its wings, trying to pass.

But then like a villain wearing a cape,

The glass shattered, and the creature escaped.

Quick as a flash, it darted away,

It didn’t want to be caught today.

Then my brother got his gun,

“Bang!” it went and he smiled, having fun.

Then the insect dropped down,

Fell to the floor and broke its crown.

He cheered, “Hip hip hooray!”

He’d shot another bug today.

But then my aunt said:

“I could’ve done that.”
