Alexis de Tocqueville: Rhetorical Analysis Assignment

Evaluate how effectively Alexis de Tocqueville conveys his ideas in the essay from Democracy in
America. Do not discuss the ideas of the essay directly; rather, you are discussing the various aspects of
writing in the essay. You may, for example, discuss the ideas of the essay in offering support for a
contention about the writing, or in arguing that there is a particular flaw or strength in the development
of ideas. Your thesis should convey the merit or lack of same in the writing and thinking of
deTocqueville. Write about each aspect in a separate paragraph:

a. Diction
b. Tone
c. Paragraph organization and development
d. Development of major arguments
e. Organization
f. Use of examples
g. Clarity and placement of thesis

This should be typed, double spaced, with a 12 point font. Papers are due Tuesday, April 12 th. No late
work will be accepted.
