Terminology
Desktop publishing – process of using a personal computer & a software program to
merge text & graphics
Camera ready – files suitable for outside commercial printing
Development of Desktop Publishing
Page description – process that describes how a page will look, what will be placed on
the page & where it will be placed
Layout – selection & placement
PageMaker uses:

Text
Limit number of colors in one publications to a maximum of 4 colors
Headings of the same level should be the same font style
Body should be same style throughout
Typeface
Serif
Has small lines that extend from the main portion of the character
Times New Roman
Usually used for the body
Typeface cont.
Sans serif
Don’t have the extenders
Ex. Helvetica or Arial
Usually used for headings
Typeface cont.
Display
Cursive, curly fonts
Ex. Script or Gothic
Large type or headings
Personal or informal doc. & invitations
Measurements
Picas & points
6 picas to an inch
12 points to a pica or 72 points per inch
Good rule of thumb:
10 to 12 point for body
14 to 18 point for headings

Pasteboard – used to place graphics & text until ready for them in the publication

Margin guides – helps keep text & graphics inside margins
Ruler guides – help keep text & graphics aligned
Column guides – used to specify how many columns publication will have & keep
information inside those columns

Specify space between them

Drag from horizontal or vertical ruler, can be cleared by dragging them off the page
Greeked text
Simulated text because in current view (or zoom) the text is illegible

Put pointer in document setup
Alt & click & drag
Or
Click on grabber hand on toolbox
