2__ TIMES OF OMAN Saturday, December 6, 2008 OMAN Late Omani pioneer to be honoured in Syria for research and academics ‘Times News Service MUSCAT — Syria will organise a Literary Festival and a Forum of Arb Pioneers and Inventors. in Damascus fiom December 20-22 under the auspices of Dr Bashar Al Assad, presi- dent of Syria, which will honour the late Omani pio- neet, Professor Fatma Al ‘Moa'mary, in the field of invention, research and aca- demics. ‘The function is being held under the auspices of the Arab League and the Ministry of Culture in Syria ‘The honour is being bestowed on the late Fatma based on her biography doc- tumented by Dr Asyah bint Nasser bin Saif Al Bualy in a book titled The Pioneer Professor Fatma bint Salem bin Saif Al Maa'mary (1911- VERSATILE: Professor Fatma 2002) — A Historical, Documentary and Academic ‘Study — issued in February 2008, by the Ministry of Heritage and Culture in ‘Muscat (On ‘this occasion, the organisers of the festival have invited Dr Asyah Al Bualy, adviser for culture and ‘humanities at the Research Council, to attond the funetion and receive the merit certificate and honour ‘on behalf of her grandmath- fr, the late Professor Fatma ‘Al Maa’ mary. The Omani pioneer obtained her PD in Latin from London University in 1955, She is considered the second woman in the whole Of the Middle Bast and the first person in the whole of the Gulf region to obtain such a certificate. She was presented with many awards during her lifetime for being one of the pioneers ofthe 20th contury, including a gold medal in 1978 from Mohammed Anwar AL Sadat, former president of Egypt Moreover, the book on Fatma is currently in the process of being translated into English —.
