Upon completion, the student will be able to demonstrate the concepts/skills
taught in the IT Essentials 1 course.

Instructions
The instructor will provide all additional information required to successfully
complete this assessment. DO NOT MARK the “Completed” box at the end of
each Part.

Part 1: PC Assembly
The student will perform the tasks listed below. When you have finished, double
check your work and notify the instructor.
Tasks:
1. Open the PC case cover.
2. Install the following:
 Hard drive – attach power cord, ribbon cable
 Floppy drive – attach power cord, ribbon cable
 CD-ROM/DVD – attach power cord, ribbon cable
 Memory
 NIC
 Sound card – attach cable from CD-ROM to sound card - Install
drivers for sound card if needed
 Video card

Part 2: Operating Systems
This section tests the previous step along with your knowledge to access and
configure the system BIOS when the operating system loads. Access the BIOS
setup screen at first boot and switch the default drive boot sequence.
Tasks:
1. Turn on the computer
2. Access the system BIOS and change the default drive boot sequence to:
 Floppy
 Hard Drive
 CD-ROM
3. Notify the instructor when you have completed the work.

Part 3: Troubleshooting Concepts
This section tests your individual troubleshooting skills. Notify the instructor when
you have completed the work.
Tasks:
1. Device Manager
 Access Device Manager
 Are the devices listed for this system properly installed?

 List any problems and your solutions?

2. Manually enter an IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway.

Part 4: Preventive Maintenance Concepts


Tasks:
This section tests your knowledge about basic preventive maintenance.
1. Scandisk / Error-checking
 Demonstrate to the instructor the process needed to initiate Scandisk /
Error-checking.
2. Initiate Defrag.
 Demonstrate to the instructor the process needed to initiate Defrag.
