• Daniel Francis “Dan” Akerson, was born
on October 21, 1948, in California.

• Grew up in Mankato, Minnesota.

• Currently resides in McLean, Virginia.

• Is married with three children.

 Education
• Graduated from U.S Naval Academy in
1970 with B.S in Engineering.

• Earned his M.S in Economics from London

school of Economics.
 Career
• Currently serving as Chairman of GM from
1st January, 2011.
• Served as CEO of GM since 1st
September, 2010.
• Joined GM’s Board on 24th July, 2009.
• Prior to joining GM Akerson was MD of
The Carlyle Group.

• Before joining Carlyle, Akerson served in

several key roles in MCL Communication
from 1983-93 including VP and CFO from
1987-90

• Served as Chairman and CEO of General

instrument company from 1993-95
• Served as Chairman from 1996-2007 and
as CEO of Nextel Communication from
1996-99.
• Served as Chairman and CEO of OX
Communication.

• He was involved in Carlyle’s buyout activity
in Asia, Europe, Financial services,
infrastructure in Japan and US
• During his tenure in MCI formulated and
executed its global strategy.
• While at General instrument lead to a
successful effort to develop and deploy the
first digital video satellite and cable system
domestically & internationally
• As CEO of Nextel communication
transform company from regional analog
walky-talky provider into a national digital
wireless competitor.
• As Chairman & CEO of Ox communication
lead a successful restructuring of the
company.

• In addition to serving on GM board of
director Akerson also serves on the board
of director of American express an the US
Navel academic foundation.
