– Write a letter to yourself in last year’s class.
– Describe how your daily expectations and experiences
are different.
– Offer advice on how to succeed.
– Introduce and prepare your past self for changes in
your new environment.

Judith Jango- Cohen.
2. Reflect in your Reading Journal:
– How would you re-design Ellis Island to
accommodate the large numbers and diversity of
peoples entering the United States for the first time?
– Draw, color and label the facilities and describe their
functions.

– What kind of economic pursuits, businesses and jobs
do you think are availible to immigrants and non-
native language speakers?
– If an newcomer was a doctor in his or her native
country, can he or she expect a job of equivilent
esteem and/ or pay?

2. Reflect, share and discuss with a partner:
– What rights, responsibilities and obligations do
immigrants and non- native langugage speakers have
to their new communities and country?
– What responsibilities and obligations do communities
and country have to immigrants and non- native
langugage speakers?
– What are the individual and societal consequences and
costs of non- assimilation?
