TE A M BU I LD I NG & LE A DE R SH IP Pr o gr am

Te a m Bu i ld i ng O b je c ti v es :

All participants will engage in a meaningful and active exploration of

the issues facing the group and how good team and leadership skills
benefit all team members. Particular attention will be paid to objectives
set out by the client; some examples are:
-Giving the team an opportunity to h av e s o me f u n to g et h er .
-E mp h as i zi ng le a de rs h ip skills as integral to gr e at t e am w or k
-Exploring ways the team sees yo u r or g an i za ti o n’ s m is s io n a nd
va l ue s applied in their day-to-day work lives.

Th e P ro g ra m :

Your group will be involved in a number of activities. Each exercise is

designed to learn about and stimulate discussion on specific elements of
good t ea m wo r k. We use experiential exercises to give teams an objective
perspective and a level playing field, allowing them to reflect as equals
on the principles of teamwork and issues that face their team.

At the end of each exercise, the facilitator will lead a discussion on

what the exercise taught the participants about teams, and how these
lessons can be transferred back to their place of work. It is the
participants who decide what lessons are most relevant to them, they get
to focus on the issues that they feel will net the most positive result
if dealt with by the group. An end of day debrief and action planning
session will also take place, where participants will develop “next
steps” for the group based on the most relevant team lessons learned,
keeping in mind the goals of the retreat.

These exercises do not require physical strength or fitness–nor are they

dependent on athletic ability or size. We operate under the principle of
"Participation by Choice", and recognize that not everyone will want to
engage in the activities at the same physical level. Accordingly, the
exercises are designed with multiple roles, to include all participants.
If they are not comfortable with the physical part of the exercise, a
different role will be assigned to them. They will not be coerced to
undertake an activity that makes them uncomfortable, either by the
facilitator or by fellow team members.

We often suggest an integrated approach to the le a de rs h ip skills

development portion of the program, if applicable. By this we mean the
leadership theory tutorials would take place at various times throughout
the day, some concepts would be introduced at the start of the day, such
as; how a team deals with change of leadership, goal setting, delegation,
group decision making and motivation. The group would also be given an
opportunity at this juncture to propose some of the behaviours they feel
are fundamental to great leadership. Armed with the results of this
preliminary exploration it will be our job to facilitate group
discussions after each activity that will generate some team specific
lessons learned about leadership. The end of day debrief will highlight

the most pertinent lessons and group members will decide on actions that
will apply these lessons to their ongoing work relationships.

We also like to use st o ry te l li n g as a way to add value and impact on

clients and customers. Most groups find this of particular interest. it
has always been part of our explanation of experiential teambuilding to
new groups that they will be “creating a story together by living it
together” from which they can learn a lot about themselves as a team. I
believe the stories you will create and what you learn from them will
have a lasting and positive effect on your team.

Ac t iv it i es :

We offer a wide range of team building activities. Client specific

activities will be chosen with group objectives, group size and the event
facility in mind. Some examples are:

Trust walk: In pairs participants walk, one blindfolded and the other
guiding, through a pre-determined set of obstacles or from point A to
point B. This presents a model of the interpersonal communication process
and the ways individuals create negative or positive communication
climates.

Rope Square: This very challenging activity requires that team members
listen effectively to each other, demonstrate respect, patience and
understanding towards their fellow team members. Their facility to
communicate is compromised, their comfort zones are threatened and
conflicts can arise. The team’s ability to accept change, to understand
& accept each individual’s role, and build consensus will determine the
chances for success.

Numbers: Team members are under time pressure in this activity. Dealing
with stress, competition and limited resources, team members must work
together to remain focused on the goal they share. Issues of
inclusiveness, shared leadership, respect and flexibility are inherent in
the teams’ ability to accomplish this task.

Spider’s Web: Team members must rise to the challenge of this activity by
communicating effectively with each other, listen to different ideas,
share responsibility for their decisions, and effectively participate in
group planning. All members are fully engaged in the activity and all
the members must accomplish the task in order for the team to succeed.

Electric Maze: Teams must use all the communicating skills available to
the group to navigate a pre-determined path through an imaginary electric
maze. Leadership change and creative thinking come in handy here.

Toxic Waste: Participants work to neutralize a series of cataclysmic

toxic spills. Innovative and collaborative ideas are at a premium in the
rush to save the earth from certain doom.

Your facilitator would be happy to discuss the activity options available

to your group, the better acquainted he or she is with your objectives
the more he or she is able to meet your needs.
