• Reptiles are characterized as a group of vertebrates
that produce an amniotic egg and are covered with
scales and do not produce their own body heat
• 4 major orders of reptiles
– Crocodilia
– Rhynchocephalia
– Squamata
– Testudines

• Bilateral symmetry
• Large variety of shapes
• Tetrapods
• Scales
• Ectothermic (cold-blooded)

• Complete digestive system- includes liver and
gall bladder

• Lungs with a complete respiratory system
• Young and adult reptiles have lungs
• Rib cage
• Turtles have adapted to breathe underwater
Circulatory System
• Closed circulatory system
• 3 or 4 chambered heart
Nervous System
• Cephalization
• Brain and a spinal cord
• Larger cerebrum and cerebellum
• Fine-tuned senses
• Eyes with advance visual depth
Skeleton/Movement
• Epidermal scales

• Tetrapods
• Snakes slither instead of walk
Reproduction
• Sexual reproduction
• Internal fertilization
• Protective, leathery shell
