Elderly Drivers

Common Misconceptions
The Truth About Elderly Drivers
What happens when seniors loose
their license?

road/story?id=11583601
With the growing number of elders
in the United States what can be
done to conserve their right to drive?
Current Policy
Doctors are obligated to tell their
patients if they are at risk to drive.

Anyone including doctors can

anonymously report any senior who is
suspected of being an unsafe driver
to the DMV. And they will be tested.

Some states such as Idaho have

shortened the renewal cycle from
every eight years to every four or two
years after age of 63.

The retesting requirements for senior

drivers will vary by state. Generally,
the elderly driver is required to visit a
driver’s license office in person,
where he/she would take a driving
test and/or a vision test. Some states
have laws that permit licensing
personnel to request that a driver
undergo a psychological or physical
exam in order to qualify for renewal.
