Intelligent Diabetes Care

for the Elderly

Diabetes: A Serious Health Threat among the Elderly

► Diabetes is more likely to affect older

Americans. Almost 27% of people age
65 years+ had diabetes in 2010.
► 390,000 new cases diagnosed in 65+
age group in 2010 alone. 84% adult
diabetics receive treatment
► Every day in America about 10,000
people turn 65.
► By 2030, roughly one out of every five
Americans will be aged 65 years and
older.

Everyday medication management is complex for elderly diabetics;

problem often compounded by poor eyesight or cognitive
impairments.
Nature of Complexity: Examples

► 14% adult diabetics take both oral and

insulin medications
► Complex Treatment Routine: Multiple
Oral Pills, Insulin Injections, Glucose
Testing with varying frequency/times
► Sequencing of Medications e.g.,
injections before oral medication, post-
prandial test 2-3 hrs after fasting test etc
► Tracking Inventory – refilling medications
on time to avoid complications
► Regular glucose testing and tracking
readings and progress over several days

Our approach is to develop an intelligent but affordable “safety” lamp

that provides real-time medication assistance to senior patients
without infringing on their privacy.

GUARDIAN integrates a small adjustable web camera, a palm-sized video

analytics engine, display screen and network connectivity. The web camera
1 Device focuses only on a small “region of interest” in and around the medication
cabinet. The camera view is displayed on the screen for easy adjustment by
the patient. Video analytics engine is located inside the hollow metal base.
