VI.

QUESTIONS TO BE ANSWERED:

1. Differentiate apparent power from true power.

Apparent power is the power in the inductive or capacitive circuits that have a phase
angle which are leading or lagging while true power is the actual power in the whole
circuit.

2. Of the three circuit elements present in the general RLC circuit, which absorbs a net
amount of energy? How about the other two elements?
The inductor stores the net amount of energy and controls the current, while the capacitor
controls the voltage and the resistor creates a damping effect that reduces the amplitude
of oscillations in an oscillatory system.

3. What does a wattmeter measure?

A wattmeter measures the real power dissipated in a circuit.

4. Two loads are connected in parallel across a 13 200 volt line. Load A draws 200kW at
0.6 p.f. (lagging), load B takes 200kVA at 0.8 p.f. (lagging). Find the reactive, apparent
and true power and the line current.

Pa = 200 kW Sb = 200 kVA

p.f.a = 0.6 lagging p.f.b = 0.8 lagging
Ɵa = 53.13° Ɵb = 36.87°

200 kW 200 kVA
Qa = 266.67 kVAR Qb = 120 kVAR
S= √200 kW 2+ 266.67 kVAR 2 P= √200 kVA 2−120 kVAR 2
Sa = 333.33 kVA Pb = 160 kW

PT = 160 kW + 200 kW = 360 kW

QT = 266.67 kVAR + 120 kVAR = 386.67 kVAR
ST = 333.33 kVA + 200 kVA = 533.33 kVA
I = S/V = 40.40A
