Rhody Energy & URI Energy Future

Annual Fact Sheet

The Rhody Energy & URI Energy Future collaboration is committed to achieving energy efficiency on
all University of Rhode Island campuses, and monitors all university-affiliates in their efforts to lessen
our environmental footprint and become more green-focused.

According to a URI Energy Future report in 2008 presented by Bradley S. Moran, PhD.,
The University of Rhode Island has failed to upkeep effective energy usage in the
following ways:

• Trash removal costs increased 40% between 2002 and 2007

• Recycling costs reduced by only $2,000 in the same time span despite creation of URI
Recycles Student Senate-funded organization
• Research and operating costs increased by 256% over a 17 year span
• the most rapid increase of all public universities in New England
• Heating costs increased by 60% while electric costs increased by 80% and oil usage increased by 83%
between 1997 and 2007
• This caused URI’s eCo2 footprint to maintain a “medium-high” range per square foot for 11
years
• $1.3 million over fiscal year budget spent on energy in 2008
• Yet, no significant plans have been released to the public regarding reversing these daunting
numbers.
